Guards

Full Quenton Nelson Scouting Report

Played in a power pro offense at Notre Dame and was easily the best OG in college football. He has the ideal size of an interior offensive lineman.

Athletic Ability is good, has quality lateral quickness, very balanced, nice change of direction ability. Great Mental Processing, knows the game well, identifies when his own technique is lacking certain areas, after he handles his first opponent he looks for his next one, can identify a late blitzing safety and pick him up from the other side of the line. Good Competitive Toughness, after making a big hit on a player he will make a bigger hit on the next opponent, has a little nasty in him. Good play speed, easily can reach second level blocks, can cover a large amount of ground fast. Elite Play Strength, put up an outstanding bench reps number at the combine, has mauler potential, will always win vs the average opponent. Elite Pass Blocker, did not allow a sack this previous season, fundamentally sound, patient, his weight is always balanced, best at passing off blocker and immediately changing his form to pick up the stunt. Good Run Blocker, creates movement and stays engaged with his opponent. Good Gap Blocker, his speed will help him make the first hit on the opponent and help create the gap, then extend the gap with his great strength. Good Puller, finds his target quickly, stay tight to the line of scrimmage, will dive to make sure he gets a piece of the opponent. Good Use of Hands, keeps his hands inside when stationary, fights to keep them inside, very powerful hands.

Not elite strength, may struggle vs an Aaron Donlad type player, could have better technique as a run blocker, when reaching the second level he will have his head down and butt up, which may miss his opponent. Could be a little faster open up from his stance to begin his pulling. When on the move his hands like to get outside and may get called with a holding.

Overall, Nelson is the best guard prospect in the draft. He would be great in a power scheme at the next level. He will start day one at the next level and will likely play 10+ years.

Full Isaiah Wynn Scouting Report

Played LT for the run dominant Georgia Offense. A lot of inside zone runs were used in the system. Wynn doesn’t have a long wingspan which will most likely force him inside to play LG or RG. Just a little undersized, but overall is average.

Athletic Ability is great, quick, explosive, balanced, great lateral movement, nice change of direction, overall movement skills can be used out in space. Good mental processing, well understanding of who his assignment is and aware of stunts. Good Competitive Toughness, same level of effort on every play, will block downfield. Good Play Speed, capable of reaching the second level and making an impact, much faster than the average OG prospect. Good Play Strength, will be useful as an interior guard, handles most of his opponents head on, will create some pancakes. Good Pass blocker, better when he faces the bigger opponents, his combination of strength and speed will easily help keep the QB clean, patient. Great Run Blocker, launches himself into the defensive lineman, great job chipping one and moving to the next, best shown for inside zone runs. Good Gap Blocker, great down blocker, quickness off the LOS will allow him to get frontside and allow the front wall of the gap to be created. Good Puller, nice job opening up out of stance and identifying who to pick up.

His hand placement needs more consistency, when he makes first contact with his opponent they will start out inside, but hands will begin to reach outside when trying to sustain his block. As a tackle, he does not keep his hips square to the LOS and would struggle vs edge rushers with great bend. His pulling could improve if he wouldn’t get so wide, if he stayed tighter to the LOS he could reach the opponent faster.

Overall, Wynn should be moved to guard. Would fit perfectly in a run heavy offense that likes to use the inside zone quite a bit. Should be a starter as soon as he gets in the league.

Full Will Hernandez Scouting Report

Played as a LG in UTEP’s zone blocking scheme. Very large for an interior lineman. Good height and great weight, arm length appears to be long than the average interior OL.

Athletic Ability is solid, some quickness, explosive for his size. Solid Mental Processing, if his first assignment is covered he will look to help or pick a new assignment, usually aware of blitzers. Great Competitive Toughness, Effort is a double plus, shows how much he cares in a blowout, loves putting his opponent on the ground. Elite play strength, absolute mauling blocker, serves only pancakes, overpowered opponents with great strength. Good Pass Blocker, nice job transitioning from one blocker to the next, capable of sliding and picking up an edge rusher coming out of a 5 or 7 tech. Great Run Blocker, his Elite strength will pave the way for him to create a lot of movement, nice job chipping and moving to next assignment. Good Gap Blocker, turns his body to create the gap and pushes out to extend the gap.

At his size, it won’t be easy to reach the second level, he will struggle vs faster opponents. When pulling, he may miss his faster assignment and engaging with his opponent may not happen at all, but he has shown to stay tight to the LOS and understands who he needs to pick up. His hands tend to be placed outside when reaching the second level, but he improved from his Junior Season.

Overall, Hernandez is a mauling guard who should be used in a run heavy offense. He is capable of being used in a zone running scheme at the next level, but a power pro would fit him better.

Full Braden Smith Scouting Report

RG at Auburn, in a zone blocking scheme with some gap/man plays. Great height, but his weight doesn’t match, does not have great girth. Long Arms with great build.

Athletic Ability is good, explosive off the LOS, moves well for a OL, hips are flexible. Needs to work on his footwork some. Good Mental Processing, identifies his assignment and does a nice job transitioning when there may be a stunt or a late blitzer. Good Play Speed, will be useful in screens, shows he can reach the frontside block, lighter frame allows more speed. Great Play Strength, consistent winner with his body strength, not challenged by great DL, very useful in short yardage situations, some Mauler in his game. Great Pass Blocker, keeps head on a swivel, reliable in one on one situations, patient, good technique, Anchor. Good Run Blocker, when dealing with DL at the POA he consistently makes a lot of movement, holds ground. Good Gap Blocker, does a nice job positioning himself to make and extend the gap, effective trap blocker. Good Use of Hands, keeps his hand inside, quick punch, long arms help him be the first to make contact.

He needs to show more consistent effort, there are times where he is not giving it his all – mainly out in space. Pulling needs some work, takes a moment for him to find his opponent, gains too much depth when pulling. When run blocking at the second level, he has issues with either reaching or staying engaged with the LB. Partly is because his feet can get a little wide.

Overall, Smith is a good prospect. I believe he would be a good starter when he enters the league, but I would like him to add some weight to help with the Elite NT/DT. Should fit in a zone blocking scheme, if he works on identifying his 2nd level opponent he can be useful in both inside and outside zone.
