Outside Linebackers

Full Tremaine Edmunds Scouting Report

Played as the Will LB at Virginia Tech in a 4-3 system. Tremendous height and weight, much larger than the average WILL.

Athletic Ability is great, moves tremendously well for his size, quick, shows explosive movements, great hips. Solid Mental Processing, could be very useful as a QB spy, attacks when given the chance, quick to recognize screen. Good Play Speed, shows closing speed, his speed can handle some of the elusive RBs. Good Play strength, handles average OL well, can shed blockers, has that hit-stick factor. Good Open-Field Tackler, wraps up and explodes through his opponent. Great vs the outside run, his speed will allow him to prevent the RB from turning the corner, takes great angles, has the vision to find the gap between the pulling lineman. Good Zone Coverage, moves when he reads the eyes of the QB, anticipates when to make a play on the ball, recognizes short route concepts. Good man coverage, great job covering the flat and the checkdown.

His level of effort does not reach the ceiling. Doesn’t seem to be interested in trying to chase down a long run. Not going to jump in a pile.  Needs to improve his run at the POA, gap responsibility is a challenge for him. Multiple occasions he has jumped a gap too early.

Overall, Edmunds has freakish potential, that size with that speed is rare. Although, he can improve his overall understanding of the game better. He may not be a great fit as a Mike or a Sam, the best fit for him would be a 4-3 OLB.

Full Malik Jefferson Scouting Report

Played as the Mike LB at Texas. Because the Big 12 has a lot of spread offenses he played more in a 7 on 7 league rather than the classic ground and pound football. He is physically built to be an NFL LB. Has the build and overall size teams look for.

Athletic Ability is Great, quick laterally, explosive downhill, hips are flexible, has some leaping ability. Good Mental Processing, takes his easy opportunities for a sack even though that’s not his assignment, quick understanding of run/pass, has fantastic vision, would be very useful as a QB spy. Good Competitive Toughness, won’t give up on a play, fights off his blocks, plays through pain, has confidence in himself, steps up in big games. Good Play speed, faster than average Mike LBs, shows some elusive ability when avoiding blockers, his speed can be useful for blitzes, good closing speed when running downhill. Great Play Strength, can bring the boom, strong lower body, a dominant player in short yardage situations. Good Open-Field Tackler, consistent, uses force, wraps up his tackles most of the time, vicious tackles. Good vs Outside Run, will dominate the stretch plays his mix of speed, strength and vision will allow him to squeeze through the Line and make a tackle in the backfield. Great vs the Point of attack, comes downhill once run is recognized, finds the correct gap, takes full advantage of the slow offensive lineman. Solid Man coverage, can cover most TEs and RBs. Does not allow much space.

He struggled in zone coverage, but it’s not his style. He is a run stopper, so of course he will struggle in this area. Needs to be better at recognizing the passing concept, it’s unlikely that he will make a play on the football, not a large zone, gets too attached to one route and does not transition well. His tackling could improve by not leaving his feet early. Vs the outside run, he needs to improve his angles. Have a better understanding of outside contain. His production level never matched his potential.

Overall, Jefferson has the potential to be a good starter in the league. I would like to see him play as a 3-4 ILB. Less responsibility in the passing game and he can still be useful vs the run. However, he can still be used as a 4-3 Mike, but I would like to see him play outside some and once he has the defense down he should move back to Mike.

Full Lorenzo Carter Scouting Report

Weakside 3-4 OLB at Georgia. He helped lead the Georgia defense to the National Championship game. Excellent height, he is considered underweight for his size, but not too far off. Long arms and legs, good overall build.

Athletic Ability is great, fluid hips, great balance, shows explosive twitch, quickness, leaping ability. Good Mental Processing, stays home on trick plays/counters/options, great understanding of knowing where the ball is, smart enough to be used as a QB spy and he will take his shot when he gets the opportunity. Good competitive Toughness, has a vicious play style, a lot of confidence in his play. Great play speed, shows that he can be used in coverage and has an above average range, his speed will make it hard for opponents to breakaway, shows acceleration needed to be an OLB. Good strength, not what he is really known for, but he still brings power, shows how he can convert speed to power, will put a big hit on the opponent. Good Pass rusher, his length will make it easier for him to get around the edge, great bend, has multiple moves to get by the OT, consistent pressure on the QB. Good Use of hands, his arm length will allow him to stay off the lineman, quick and have the placement needed. Good Upfield burst, best when in a 2pt stance, one of the first to reach the POA, explodes into opponent. Good Pursuit, shows the closing speed needed to chase down a scrambling QB or a RB trying to turn the corner.

Only solid vs the run, when he is not the first to make contact he will struggle to stop the run. His strength isn’t great yet, he has struggled vs strong offensive lineman and tight ends. Should never be put in a 3 or 4pt stance, kills his upfield burst.

Overall, Carter is a good prospect, he should play as a weakside 3-4 OLB. His speed will be very useful in coverage and when rushing the passer. Expect him to start very early in his career and average around 8 or 9 sacks a season.

Full Uchenna Nwosu Scouting Report

3-4 OLB at USC. He has some length to be considered a 3-4 OLB, long legs and above average arm length, about average height and weight for a LB.

Athletic Ability is great, quick, explosive, balanced, one of the best leaping abilities for the linebackers. Good Mental Processing, very instinctive when timing on when to knock down the QBs pass, great understanding of diagnosing a run/pass. Good Competitive Toughness, works hard to get in the backfield, plays with confidence, not afraid of the big stage. Great play speed, has elusive ability to squeeze through the OL, has closing speed. Good Open-field tackler, uses his long arms to wrap up his opponents, can make the tackle despite not being in a good position. Good vs the outside run, has the speed to get the outside, often will take the appropriate angle. Great Zone Coverage, especially in the shorter regions, has a large zone, capable of making a play on the ball, moves with the eyes of the QB. His athletic ability will allow to be very useful in blitzing situations, shows bend when getting around the OTs.

He will have to work on his strength at the next level, he has struggled vs good strength opponents – especially interior lineman. He will lose most matchups when he is not the first to make contact. Being a run stopper between the tackles will make it hard because of the strength issue, but his elusive ability can make him shine here and there. He is fine with covering TEs and RBs in the flat or checkdown, but he won’t be a lockdown defender. Will get turned around by good route runners. His overall size will likely force him to move inside, either to a 3-4 ILB slot or he could be a 4-3 OLB. Needs to work on his use of hands, likes to keep them low which means he won’t be the first to make contact.

Overall, Nwosu is an athletic player who should be used as a 4-3 OLB. Preferably a Will where he can use his great speed. Give him a season to adjust to the new position and he should show playmaking ability.

Full Dorance Armstrong Scouting Report

3-4 OLB at Kansas. He has the body of a basketball player. Tall player, with long arms and legs, his weight may be a little concern because he does not seem to be what he is listed; however, he has a very muscular frame.

Athletic Ability is great, hips are very fluid, shows that he well balanced, explosive movements, great lateral movement and change of direction, has leaping ability. Good Competitive Toughness, has a high effort level, fights hard to get in the backfield and hit the QB, has the swagger of a defensive star. Great Play speed, has the speed to be used in coverage as a 3-4 OLB at the next level, his mix of athletic ability and speed gives him the option to be a QB spy, one of the fastest edge prospects in the draft. Good Pass rusher, speed rusher, great bend, identifies when an OL will guess and he takes full advantage, his long arms will allow him to stay off the lineman. Good Use of Hands, shows moments of good placement, hands are very quick. Good upfield burst, on passing downs, he is the first off the LOS – especially when in a 2pt stance, comes out low and explosive. Great Pursuit, a player who is willing to go chase down a opponent down the field even if it looks like a TD, shows his closing speed, will chase down a scrambling QB, catches a RB before he can turn the corner.

Needs to be more discipline on his run gaps and not get fooled by the misdirection plays. Must improve his strength when he gets to the next level. He will struggle heavily vs tackles with great strength, will rarely see him be a bulldozer. Will not win if he is not the first to make contact. In stopping the run, he will not be able to prevent gaps from opening and he will not stuff the run, but he has been able to set outside contain.

Overall, Armstrong is a good prospect with the potential to be great. His athletic ability will intrigue many teams, but he needs time to gain strength and learn the game more before he can thrive in the league. He should be used as a weak side 3-4 OLB and use him primarily in passing situations when he first enters the league.

Full Ogbonnia Okoronkwo Scouting Report

Played as a 3-4 OLB at Oklahoma, he is a little undersized to be considered an outside LB, but his arm length should allow him to stay outside.

Athletic Ability is good, very quick, balanced, shows explosion at the POA, fluid hips. Good Mental Processing, has the vision to identify play direction, where the ball is, and stays home on reverses. Good Competitive Toughness, shows effort by chasing down WR, will come back into the game despite dealing with a minor injury. Great Play Speed, his speed will allow him to be a speed rusher, shows the closing speed, too elusive for most OL. Great Pass Rusher, multiple moves to get around the OT, shows great bend, effective on either side, shows consistent pressure on the QB, shows that suddenness, twitch. Good vs the Run, understands how to set the outside contain and is a good tackler. Good Use of Hands, quick hands with quality placement, has a very nice swim move. Good Upfield burst, quick first step, pad level is low and explodes into opponent. Good pursuit, his closing speed and his determination will allow him to chase down almost any opponent.

Strength needs improvement, would have trouble vs the above average OL when trying to shed blocks. He’s not a bull rusher. Not going to be perfect at stopping the run. His strength may have some teams put him at a 3-4 ILB slot.

Overall, Okoronkwo is a good pass rusher. He may average to have around 7 sacks a season if he stays at a 3-4 OLB position. I believe he should stay outside and let him get stronger. He does have potential.

Full Jerome Baker Scouting Report

4-3 WILL LB for Ohio State. Has about average height for a LB, but he is well underweight for a starting NFL LB. Longer arms, more define build than mass, lower body is good for now until he adds weight.

Athletic Ability is great, shows quickness, balanced, leaping ability, change of direction, and some explosive twitch. Good Mental Processing, reads the option well, recognizes screens, does not take too long for him to diagnose a play. Great Play Speed, has the speed of a safety, shows his closing speed, can be considered a sideline to sideline LB. Good open-field tackler, unusual for him to dive at the feet of an opponent, wraps up his tackles. Good vs the outside run, has the speed to prevent the RB from turning the corner, has the vision to anticipate which gap to take. Good vs RUN at the point of attack, will come down hill once run is recognized, his speed will allow him to make some tackles for loss. Good Man Coverage, will be used as a QB spy at the next level, can cover the big TEs deep down the field, can cover some slot WRs in off man.

I see him coast a little more than the average player, not too bad, but there are plays I believe he could have made if he hustled, not very willing to dive into a pile. His current size will limit his play strength, his slim frame may be a concern to add muscle. He will struggle with OL, especially when try to shed blocks, will lose to some Big RBs. In zone coverage, he is very rangy, but he still needs to have a better feel for the receivers, allows too much space, needs to find the football.

Overall, Baker is the new style of LB that would be more helpful vs the pass than the average LB. He fits the 4-3 WILL and he should be drafted into that position. I’m not sure if rushing him in there would help him. Perhaps, once he gains more muscle mass he could see more reps on the field. I believe he has good potential, but has work to do.

Full Shaquem Griffin Scouting Report

Griffin played as a 3-4 OLB at UCF. His twin brother played as a corner and currently plays for the Seahawks. If it wasn’t for his weight, I would consider him more of a safety. His height is a little below average, a lot of his weight appears to be in his mid-section.

Athletic Ability is great, lateral quickness, very explosive player, has the change of direction needed out in space, has body control to get under the OTs. Needs to improve his balance at the POA. Good Mental Processing, can tell he studies film, has the awareness to be a QB Spy, quick to diagnose the read option, usually recognizes run/pass. Elite Competitive Toughness, has so many disadvantages but he doesn’t care. He will show his heart on every single play. Willing to put a big hit on an opponent. Great Play Speed, very impressive closing speed, shows off his deep speed, his speed must be used as a pass rusher. His speed helps his ability vs the outside run, showed off vs Auburn, showed great pursuit when racing an opponent to the edge, even chases down opponents from the opposite side of the line. Good Zone and Man Coverage, no problem dealing with RBs or TEs, could cover some WRs as well. Has shown some ball skills with the ability to break up some passes.

Has had issues vs strong OL. He will be overpowered and struggles to disengage from those blockers. He has missed tackles, inconsistent on how he would tackle, dives a little early at times or wouldn’t wrap up. However, he does a great job of going through his tackle. Not going to have a big impact vs power runs in his direction.

Overall, everyone is rooting for Griffin to be drafted and make an impact at the next level. Griffin should continue to be used as a 3-4 OLB so he can continue to be utilized as a pass rusher. He will have to work on his run defense. Give him a little time, I would certainly use him for sub-packages where he will primarily rush the passer. Perhaps he could see more time when he produces a quality amount of production.

Full Darius Leonard Scouting Report

Mike LB for the small school South Carolina State. Came into the small school well underweight and has added supposedly almost 50 pounds. Very long LB, not much upper body build, still considered underweight for his size.

Good Athletic Ability, explosive, moves very well in space, hips are fluid, feet need to improve some to work on his lateral quickness. Good Competitive Toughness, willing to chase down opponent, going to put a hit on his opponent. Great Play Speed, has a large range, his closing speed is what will impress, has deep speed as well. Good Open-Field Tackler, his arm length will allow him to wrap up more consistently than average LBs, goes through the tackle. Good vs Outside Run, has the speed to beat the RB from getting to the edge, has some vision to see when a back will bounce it outside. Good Zone Coverage, his speed helps his coverage ability, shows anticipation and some ball skills, can be in a Tampa 2 coverage as a Mike. Good Man Coverage, would be very useful as a QB spy, can cover average RBs and TEs almost all areas of the field.

He is still learning how to diagnose plays, needs to be quicker to see screens develop and see run/pass. He will struggle at the next level when dealing with OGs and strong OTs, will likely struggle to shed blocks or blow up a play. Needs to be more consistent at coming downhill in an Oklahoma Drill situation, sits back and waits for the 2nd level block to occur. He will struggle vs the quick slot receivers if playing in man. Needs to improve his angles vs outside runs.

Overall, Leonard is solid prospect and there is some potential there because of his speed and athletic ability. However, I see him as a quality back-up with an impact on special teams. I would like him to be used as a WILL in a 4-3 system.

Full Tegray Scales Scouting Report

All-American LB at Indiana. The Mike of a 4-3 defense, but the team also used a lot of 3-4 sub packages. A bit undersized to be considered a 4-3 Mike, but not for a 3-4 ILB. His arm length is short, as well as height, weight is okay for height. Solid overall build.

Athletic Ability is solid, hips are about average in fluidity, change of direction could be better, not extremely explosive. Good Mental Processing, often can identify run/pass, sees his opportunities when making a play in the backfield. Good Competitive Toughness, willing player, usually doesn’t give up on a play, aggressive decision making. Good vs the Run at the POA, he will comedown hill once run is recognized, knows how to position himself to take on the FB and still make a play on the back, his vision gives him a sense of where the RB will go. Good Zone Coverage, better understanding of route concepts in zone vs man, reads QB well, some quality hands with 8 INTs, continues to drop back in his zone where there is nothing underneath.

Play Speed is solid at best, proved it at the combine too. Loses vs speedsters, doesn’t have closing speed, overall deep speed is not there. Play Strength is solid, but he has been gobbled up by the bigger OL, does not have great gap leverage when defending the run. Has trouble with making tackles at the consistent height – sometimes will dive at feet or go too high, missed a lot of tackles. Has good angles vs the outside run, but he does not have the speed needed to prevent the speedy RB from turning the corner. Will struggle vs quick WRs, his lack of change of direction really hurt him vs the sharp crossing routes.

Overall, Scales is a solid prospect. Smart player who will take advantage of opportunities. His size will limit him with his playing time. Expect him to be a quality special teams player who will also see time as a back-up in a 3-4 system.
