Running Backs

Full Saquon Barkley Scouting Report

Played in a spread offense at Penn State where he did not take snaps while being in a Single-I. He is the ideal size of an NFL RB. Has Elite build with great height and weight. Large RB.

Athletic Ability is Elite, he is capable of doing things many people cannot do. His balance is absolutely insane. Stop on a dime ability, great hip flexibility, explosive, agile, an incredible jumping ability. Great Competitive Toughness, will play through injuries, fights hard on every run to get every yard possible, will put his body on the line to make a clutch play, no way is he afraid of contact. Great Play Speed, has the elusive ability, can turn the corner, deep speed, even outruns the lighter defensive backs. Good strength, a very strong stiff arm, has the ability to push the pile, will win vs average LBs and almost all DBs. Great vision, recognizes the outside lane, deadly in open space, sees the cutback lane, sees both the first and second level and how the play is going to develop. Great Burst, acceleration is ridiculous, if he has green grass in front of him it’s a touchdown. His burst makes him eligible for a homerun play on any play. Great Finish/YAC ability, lowers his pads and is always falling forward, capable of breaking many tackles in one play and pick up a large amount of yards in one play. Good in the passing game, put a lot of work in the offseason, mainly used in the flat, but he adjusts well to the ball, finds an open area on the field when the QB is scrambling, good route runner as well. Good pass blocker, no problem dealing with the much larger player, picks up the correct man, patient and puts force into his blocks.

Solid Mental Processing, needs to focus more at getting back to the LOS when the play is a loss, maybe slow down on how much he attempts the hurdle. Needs to work on his basket catches, has struggled to make a catch with defenders nearby. Sometimes trying to make a homerun play on every play can be a weakness because he will not always take the best option.

Overall, Barkley is the best RB prospect I’ve scouted. He is an absolute freak with Elite level of potential. He would play very well in a inside zone running scheme. Would work very well in outside zone as well. Pretty much any scheme he could play in he would contribute very well in. Very rare type of prospect.

Full Derrius Guice Scouting Report

Played in a pro style offense at LSU, Guice never had a quality QB so he had to run into an 8-man box almost every play. He has the height and weight on an NFL 3 down back. Good Build.

Athletic Ability is great, nice balance, very explosive player, his change of direction ability is impressive, he has improved his hip flexibility, an agile back. Good Mental Processing, uses his blockers very well, understands when the first gap is closed and will change his option. Great Competitive Toughness, the angriest runner in this draft class, will run over his opponent, he doesn’t care about their feelings. Good Play Speed, has elusive ability, more speed than power, smooth runner who can weave his way through traffic, has breakaway speed. Good Play Strength, can withstand a big hit, has a nasty stiff arm, could be used in some short yardage situations. Great burst, hits the hole at the top speed, acceleration allows him to be a homerun threat on every play. Great Finish/YAC ability, will lower his pads, puts a lot of force into his opponent, his fight will allow him to pick up multiple yards after a hit.

His vision has been hit and miss at times, if the offense begins to struggle in a game his vision will narrow. Not much of a factor in the passing game, he will be used in the short areas of the field, but would be surprised to see him go for a deep post. He had to deal with an ankle injury for majority of the season and did not look like the same Derrius Guice from a season ago, his medicals at the combine will be imperative.

Overall, Guice is going to be a heck of a player in the NFL. If he plays in an outside zone scheme he can really showcase his skills. His determination will be one of the biggest reasons why he will be considered a star in the league.

Full Kerryon Johnson Scouting Report

Took over most of the snaps at Auburn once Pettway had his injury. Johnson is great height and weight to be an NFL RB, with long arms and legs.

Athletic Ability is great, has quickness, explosive ability, very balanced, the change of direction ability is there, has leaping ability. Great Competitive Toughness, fights thru pain, literally would throw defenders off him, continues to move his feet in a pile. Good Play Speed, if he has green grass in front of him it’s a touchdown, some elusive ability. Good Play Strength, will move the pile, break multiple tackles, his build will allow him to be key in goaline situations. Great Vision, his patience allows him to see every option, likely takes the option that has the highest homerun potential, one of the best at seeing the cutback lane. Good Burst, has acceleration but also good deacceleration when wanting to cut it back. Great Finish/YAC, will lower his pads, his size helps him pick up at minimum one or two yards after contact, he falls forward. Good Pass Blocker, patient and identifies the correct opponent to pick up. Mainly because of his speed and vision, he will rarely have a head on collision with his opponent, will get hit from the side. Lowering the chance of injury.

Not much use in the mid to deep passing game, but could be useful for screens. His patience will receive a lot of praise, but there are multiple occasions where his patience turns into pauses. Since he is always looking for the big homerun, he will hesitate to take a gap even though it would likely result in a first down. In short yardage situations, he may not want to attempt to truck his opponent even though he has the size.

Overall, Johnson can be a top RB in this league if given the right system. I would like him to play in a Inside zone system that will allow him to use his one-cut ability most of the time.

Full Sony Michel Scouting Report

Split carries with SR RB Nick Chubb in a pro-style offense but was primarily used for 3rd down situations. Has average height, but better weight for that size, above average build, longer arms.

Athletic Ability is great, very explosive player, shows quickness, great balance, has the change of direction ability, tremendous body control. Good Mental Processing, patient and pounces on an opportunity, will follow his blockers, unusual for him to play a lot in the backfield will get back to the LOS. Good competitive Toughness, continues to move his feet in a pile, capable of making a clutch play when needed. Great Play Speed, more speed than strength, very elusive, has the speed to consistently turn the corner, has the deep speed for homerun capability. Good vision, in space he can see everything, consistently identifies the outside lane, anticipates his OL to develop holes. Good Burst, explodes through the gap, great acceleration, hits his top speed before exiting the gap. Good Finish/Yards after contact, will pick up YAC when dealing with weaker competition like corners. Good in the passing game, reliable in the short areas of the field, catches away form his body, getting him out in open space should be a priority.

He is not the strongest RB; not often would you see him break a tackle or muscle his way for a first down when facing a strong LB. He isn’t the best pass blocker either, he will not be able to handle a DL or the strong LB. Should be used in the passing game instead.

Overall, Michel has some freakish talent, he can be a homerun threat for a team when called upon. When he gets stronger he might be able to handle a 3 down back role, but for now he might start as a 3rd down back. He would fit in a offense that uses their RBs a lot in the passing game.

Full Ronald Jones II Scouting Report

Athletic Ability is great, shows incredible balance, very explosive, quick, great change of direction ability, has leaping ability and has great hip flexibility. Good competitive Toughness, is very determined to keep his feet under him and pick up every yard he can. Great Play Speed, breakaway speed that will allow him to turn the corner, very elusive player, deep speed is there. Good vision, sees the cutback lane, outside zone is helpful for him to see the creases better. Great burst, shows great acceleration, reaches his top speed at the POA, he is a homerun threat on every play. Good Finish/YAC, he will put force into his opponent when trying to pick up an extra yard or so, his balance will allow him to pick up more yards from a poor tackle. Good in the Passing game, catches away from his body, has a high catching ratio, effective in the short to mid-range.

Needs to understand that he needs to get back to the LOS and not play around in the backfield, panics when a defender is in the backfield early, needs to improve his patience, will run into lineman when a gap is about to open. His play strength will not be useful in short yardage situations, he won’t move a pile, struggles to run inside vs a good defensive line, needs to improve his lower body strength. Needs to be a better pass blocker to be used on 3rd down, his strength won’t allow him to stay engaged with opponent, will struggle vs most opponents.

Overall, Jones ll is a playmaker. I would like to see him play in an outside zone running scheme, where he has a better chance of being a homerun threat. Jones may start out as a role player, but once he builds more muscle he will likely become a good starter.

Full Rashaad Penny Scouting Report

The “Diamond in the Rough” grade is given to one prospect with a 3rd round draft Grade or later, and who I believe has the potential to make a big impact in the NFL. First season as the primary back and he rushes for over 2,000 yards at San Diego State. Finished 5th in the Heisman voting. Pro style offense that used a power gap running scheme. He is about the average height and weight of an NFL RB, looks a little top heavy – especially in his arms.

Athletic Ability is good, some quickness, lateral movement, balance, explosive and has body control. Good Mental Processing, shows patience by allowing plays to develop and will use his blockers as long as he can. Great Competitive Toughness, plays at the same level no matter the weather, tries his hardest to get in the endzone, a fiery type of player. Good Play Speed, has a nice jump cut, capable of making a man miss, shows ‘some’ deep speed and can be featured for special teams. Good vision, has anticipation to see how the gaps will develop, he sees the cutback lane, goes to the open grass. Good Burst, can change gears – shows acceleration, hits his top speed when exiting the gap. Good Finish/YAC, a type of back that falls forward, will have multiple YAC when dealing with average competition, plays behind his shoulder pads. It’s not easy for an opponent to tackle him head on.

He has the size, but there are times that he plays like he doesn’t. Unusual for him to truck an opponent or break a tackle from a DL, but he does show solid strength when dealing with smaller opponents. Not much of a factor in the passing game, issues with route running and takes too long to find the football, but he has shown the ability to be used in short areas. Must improve his blocking if he wants to be a 3 down back, rarely gets in front of his blocking assignment, unaware of late blitzer, does not stay engaged when he does get in front. He may not have the fastest deep speed to be considered a homerun threat for the next level.

Overall, Penny is an interesting prospect. I do not believe he can be used as a 3rd down back at the moment, but he should be given attempts on 1st and 2nd down. He would fit an offense that uses a healthy mix of inside zone and outside zone runs, run heavy offense.

Full Nick Chubb Scouting Report

Played in a pro-style offense at Georgia, a lot of inside zones were used. Split carries with Sony Michel and DeAndre Swift. Had a terrible injury in 2015 where he tore his PCL, LCL, and MCL. Shorter than the average NFL RB, but he is heavier than most at that height. A lot of upper and lower body build. North-South Running style.

Athletic Ability is solid, great balance, but he has stiff hips, lateral movement is sluggish, his change of direction is lacking, not quick overall. Good mental Processing, follows his blockers better than most, usually he understands when he must get back to the LOS. Great competitive Toughness, no fear of what may happen to his leg, plays as if he was never injured, fights hard every play for every yard, has that “Get off me” mentality. Great Play Strength, for smaller opponents – it’s almost impossible to tackle him alone, moves the pile, similar to a bowling ball is low and strong, very key in short yardage situations. Good vision, consistently reads the correct gap to take, sees when to bounce it outside if the inside is clogged, sees the cutback lane. Great Finish/YAC, he does not stop moving his feet, his low center of gravity will allow him to move pick up more yards after trucking his opponent, falls forward.

He does not have the speed to consistently get to the edge, will be caught from behind, hard to be fast at his size, marginal acceleration, not elusive. Not a real reliable pass catcher, struggles to make a catch when defenders are near, not going to see him run many routes. Blocking will be a struggle for him when facing average opponents, his lateral movement prevent him from being able to pick up blitzers.

Overall, Chubb is a big back who runs north-south. He should be used on 1st and 2nd downs as a role player. Chubb could eventually become a solid starter one day if he is in a run heavy offense.

Full Akrum Wadley Scouting Report

Played in a pro-style offense at Iowa which was mainly a zone running scheme. The primary back and that included 3rd down. Wadley is undersized for NFL Standards, he will have to work on adding weight when he reaches the next level. His hand size is a red flag, only 8 1/8. Arms are shorter than average.

Athletic Ability is great, fluid hips, very quick player, incredible balance, shows explosive ability, elite change of direction – very impressive. Good Mental Processing, doesn’t play in the backfield gets back to the LOS, patience, uses his blockers, knows how to squeeze his body through a small gap. Great Competitive Toughness, may not have the size, but he fights hard like a power back, exact same level of fight in the first Q as the fourth Q, continues to move his feet in the pile. Great Play Speed, an elusive E-W RB, deadly in open space, lateral speed to turn the corner is impressive, has deep speed. Good vision, sees the cutback lane, incredible peripheral vision, allows him to be a kick or punt returner. Good Burst, shows his acceleration ability, home run threat. Good passing game, will be a reliable 3rd down back, consistent hands in short areas of the field. My favorite play of his involves a screen, he beats the OL to the outside, but despite the oncoming defenders he has the patience to wait for the OL to come make a couple of blocks, and Wadley would later break a tackle and pick up a first down.

His size is going to be a concern when he has to run between the tackles, not easy for him to break a tackle in the middle or bulldoze his opponent. Outside is a different story, he will run over DBs when he wants to. Not much of a blocker, mainly because he is out running a route on passing downs, but he has been late to pick up assignments and he has struggled to maintain any type of ground on a blitzer.

Overall, Wadley is a good prospect, was considered for “Diamond in the Rough”. I love him as a 3rd down back. Perhaps if he were to gain another 10 pounds of muscle he could have more snaps and possibly the primary back. I would like him to go in a pass heavy offense where he can showcase his talents in the open field.

Full John Kelly Scouting Report

RB for Tennessee, all his runs came from the shotgun. He had to share carries with Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara while at Tennessee. Did not have much production this past season but had a terrific game vs Florida. Almost 250 total yards vs Florida. He is a little undersized, but he is heavily built.

Athletic Ability is good, shows quickness, great hip fluidity, explosive, shows tremendous balance. Good Mental Processing, uses his blockers well out in space, knows how to suck in the defenders to open up lanes to the outside, cuts up field rather than play in the backfield. Great Competitive Toughness, fights very hard to pick up the first down, aggressive running style. Good Play Speed, can turn the corner, shows the ability to switch gears, quality deep speed. Good Finish/YAC, when he is about to make contact with an opponent he will put all his force into the defender. Gives him a higher chance to pick up more yards. Good in the passing game, very reliable hands, especially in short areas of the field, uses his hands rather than his body. Good Blocker, patient, has shown the ability to stop the slower but bigger DEs.

His does have a lot of power in his game, but he is limited because of his size. He lacks the ability to run between the tackles because of the size. He lacks in vision, can be too late to see the cutback lane. He looks for the wide gaps rather than the small openings, could also have better peripherals in open space. Has dropped passes when he lost concentration – thinking Touchdown. Kelly was arrested for possession for Marijuana and was suspended.

Overall, Kelly is an interesting back. His aggressive running style will make him a big name for NFL teams, but his off-the-field may be a concern. He could be quite useful as a 3rd down back. Fits a team that utilizes their RBs as receiving options.

Full Royce Freeman Scouting Report

4-year starter at Oregon where they ran a spread offense. High production with a high amount of carries in his collegiate career. Has great weight, his size is about average, bulky player.

Good Athletic Ability, balance is good, has great explosion of power in his lower body, should have a high vertical at the combine. Good Mental Processing, uses his blocks as long as he can, his angles help his blocker be more affective. Good Play Strength, will break the arm tackles and some average tackles in general, the type of player that gets stronger as the game continues, deadly stiff arm. Good vision, sees his opportunity to bounce it outside, shows anticipation. Good Finish/YAC, puts all of his weight into his opponent, when he is determined – he can create a lot of YAC, falls forward. Good Blocker, picks up his correct assignment, a patient blocker, his strength will allow him to be successful vs an average DE.

Not extremely fiery type, doesn’t always fight for extra yards, decided to not play in his final collegiate game. Not elusive enough to be an EW runner, doesn’t have much deep speed. Burst is below average, not an explosive take off, does not hit his top speed until past the 2nd level. Solid in the passing game, can make some plays in the flat or short areas of the field, but really isn’t effective as a passing threat. His high amount of carries will be a concern for many teams.

Overall, Freeman is a solid prospect, could be a quality role player to start his career and maybe become a starter for a short period of time. Would like him to be in a Inside Zone scheme where a lot of his runs come from a Single-I.

Full Kalen Ballage Scouting Report

RB for Arizona State, in 2016 he had a remarkable 8 total touchdowns vs Texas Tech. However, his overall production for his collegiate career has been poor. A very large RB, could almost be considered as a LB with his size, great height and weight, has great build for upper and lower body.

Great Athletic Ability, his core strength allows him to have great strength, expect him to do very well in the vertical, does have explosiveness, some change of direction ability. Good Play Speed, much slower than what he can do in shorts, but he still shows quality speed, has some deep speed. Good Play Strength, doesn’t match his strength level, but he is still difficult to tackle for smaller opponents, will break some arm tackles. Good Burst, does show acceleration in the open space. Good Finish/YAC ability, lowers his pad level, explodes into opponent, when running North-South he will pick up YAC. Good in the passing game, useful in the flat, good hands, has the body control to make a bad placement catch.

A hesitant runner, not a patient runner, the gap is shown, and he takes too long to take it, play too much in the backfield rather than run upfield. Needs to understand his body type is for a N-S runner, but he plays like he is a E-W runner. Plays smaller than he is, not very aggressive. His vision is lacking, he will miss wide open lanes, the cut back lane is not used greatly. Likes to be a cut blocker, but he doesn’t do a good job of preventing the defender of getting to the QB.

Overall, Ballage is a frustrating prospect, he has all the tools necessary to be a dangerous threat to defenses, but I do not believe he understands what he is capable of. Currently, he is a role player who could eventually become a starter if he were to improve his vision and his hesitation. His tools best match a Power running scheme.

Full Josh Adams Scouting Report

High production as the Notre Dame RB. Played behind the best Offensive Line in college football. A big RB, much taller than average, and carries more muscle. Long arms and legs. Could improve lower body build. A pure North-South Runner.

Athletic Ability is solid, hips are stiff, hardly any quickness, little to no change of direction ability. Good Mental Processing, he will follow his blockers, somewhat knows the down and distance. Good competitive Toughness, fights for the 1st down, not afraid of contact, he is a leader off-the-field, tough, physical runner. Good Play Speed, when he has green grass in front of him… there is a high chance he will end up in the end zone, his top speed is faster than most RBs in the NFL, on a TD run he reached 22mph! Good Play Strength, his size helps him tremendously, very difficult for average opponents to bring him down. Great Finish/YAC, will likely break many poor tackle attempts, falls forward and will pick up at least one or two more yards with an opponent on his back. Good Blocker, one of the few RBs who could be utilized as a lead run blocker, in pass blocking he shows he can be patient and deal with average pass rushers.

His lack of elusiveness will deter many NFL teams, he lacks that suddenness to have great burst, hardly any acceleration. His long startup will allow many defenses to close gaps quicker. It’s rare for him to see the cutback lane, only chooses lanes in front of him. Only will be used as an emergency checkdown in the passing game, his route running will not create separation for his lack of quickness and he is not reliable with catching the football.

Overall, Adams will likely be a back-up/role player, he cannot be used as a 3rd down back and he is not going to be a starter because his vision isn’t where it needs to be.
